1 / 3

One of Salomon's long distance models par excellence now has a little sister. The new Salomon Ultra Flow arrives, and it's one of the most versatile all-terrain ultra-distance models in the catalogue of the French company, to offer runners an alternative to the Ultra Glide range.

These Salomon Ultra Flow stand out as trail running shoes born in the image and likeness of the aforementioned Ultra Glide, but with greater simplicity and reduction in terms of cost, offering a version just as complete. A model that maintains the maximalist essence of theirs to offer comfort, cushioning and stability at all times.

Salomon Ultra Flow: Profile

Main features of the Salomon Ultra Flow

The Ultra Flow are Salomon trail running shoes designed to maintain comfort on long runs. We are talking about a model suitable for all types of runners looking for a feeling of maximum comfort, effective and durable cushioning and perfect grip on all types of terrain.

As with its big sister, the Salomon Ultra Glide 2, they stand out for maximalism, cushioning and support. However, they offer these qualities with a somewhat lighter profile and a much more affordable price. However, they still maintain some of the company's most important technologies.

For example, its midsole comes with Energy Foam, in profiles of between 32 and 26mm, giving us a drop of 6mm and a total weight of around 244 grams. Without Quicklace, but with Contagrip technology in the outsole, this is a model with great grip, which also comes with a completely lightweight and breathable upper.

Ideal runner profile: Salomon Ultra Flow

These Salomon Ultra Flow are shoes of maximum versatility. As we have already mentioned, it is a model of medium build, which will fit perfectly with runners of all types of weight, even above 80 or 85 kilos.

However, it should be noted that we are talking about a model with a rolling philosophy that you'll get the most out of on simple compact terrain. Therefore, we are talking about a model suitable for sessions of gentle and steady paces, without too many variations, which will fit perfectly for runners who need maximum cushioning and shock absorption.

Recommended distances: Salomon Ultra Flow

In terms of target distances, the Salomon Ultra Flow is a long-distance trail running shoes. We are talking about a perfect model to face training and competitions of long mileage, which may even exceed 80 or 100 kilometers.

In short, these trail running shoes for men and women stand out for the essence and quality of an elite ultra-distance model, at a great price. A model that will bring the best technologies of the French company, as far as long distance trail is concerned, to every runner who needs it, with features such as cushioning, comfort and shock absorption..

  • Ultrasound comfort
  • A very durable model

Cons

  • Quite classic design
  • Could be a little more reactive

A shoe to run an ultra in a state of "flow"

As the name implies, the Salomon Ultra Flow is a trail running shoe designed for ultra-distance running. Although a recreational runner can use them for shorter distances, as long as they prioritize comfort over performance.

Ultra yes, but Flow too. In an ultra, you experience a constant roller coaster of emotions and sensations. What you are looking for is a "state of flow", where everything flows, where one kilometer takes you to the next, with a pace where you control the climbs and enjoy the descents.

These shoes bear their name very well. After running a few kilometers in 300 and completing an ultra with them, I'll tell you why.

Trail Runner Profile of the Salomon Ultra Flow

These trail running shoes are aimed at medium-weight trail runners looking for a balance of comfort, protection and performance over long distances. Lighter runners can also use them (this is my case), especially on long runs to get the most out of the shoe's comfort. For heavier runners, Salomon offers other more suitable options.

In competitions, these shoes are ideal for distances from marathon to ultra distances. Can you use them for shorter distances? Of course. If you prioritize comfort and safety over reactivity and speed, the Salomon Ultra Flow will be perfect. However, this is not their area of expertise.

For training, this model is very versatile, excelling in long runs, where you can hike, enjoy the scenery and maintain adequate nutrition. Their versatility also allows them to be used in fartlek training, reaching a zone 3. For shorter series, they work, although they are not the most suitable.

What we liked the most about the Salomon Ultra Flow

This is the first time I've used a Salomon, and as far as the sole is concerned, I don't like to take risks. However, my friend Mikel spoke so highly of the Contagrip technology that I decided to give it a try.

During my workouts, the terrain was quite dry, so the 4 mm lugs provided the necessary grip. On steep descents, they provided a lot of security.

I ran the Soplao 10,000 ultra after a week of rain. The terrain was less favorable, with mud and wet rocks. In mud, they did a good job, and in wet rocks, I was pleasantly surprised.

The shoe offers excellent support for the foot, essential in an ultra where fatigue takes its toll. Despite my weakened ankles, the structure of the shoe gave me the necessary security, especially in the last hours of the race.

I had never tried Salomon's Quicklace system, so I really liked the classic laces. And their weight of 244 grams is a real achievement. After 75 kilometers of running, it's much appreciated.

Salomon Ultra Flow Improvement Opportunities

There are very few buts for this shoe, which has a very clear proposition. It's the sister shoe to the Ultra Glide 2, so you can't ask it to be anything other than a complementary version.

It could improve on the design. Salomon usually offers pretty classic designs, but I like to stand out when I run. The aesthetics of the shoe, while not bad, could be bolder.

The 4mm lugs are quite versatile, although a millimeter more would help on muddy terrain. However, you can't have everything in one shoe; I found them to be very well balanced.

What other models do we compare Salomon Ultra Flow to?

Why is the Salomon Ultra Flow the right choice?

You can't go wrong with these shoes. If you're an experienced runner, you'll be able to take advantage of them for ultra distances or even easy runs for shorter races. They are perfect for bulking up and, even more so, for running ultras.

For more novice runners, they offer a safe and comfortable model, with good cushioning and support, at a very competitive price.

I'm glad I tried them (otherwise, I wouldn't have worn them in a race) and will continue to use them until they wear out. I think this will happen in a long time, as despite the miles run, they are still in very good condition, both upper and outsole.

If you have any more questions about these shoes, leave them in the comments and I'll be happy to answer them.
